Weigela is a plant that produces a spectacular display of long bell shaped blooms in mid to late April for zone 7 in North Georgia, and may continue into May. To my surprise not to many people who visit our nursery have ever heard about this beautiful shrub. Weigela is a native of eastern Asia. It must have full sun! We sell three different varieties with most reach 6 ft. or more tall and wide. Pictured is a close up of the blooms this beauty produces. Weigela doesn't require much care, at least for us. We planted a small cutting two years ago and it is now 18 inches tall and about 2 ft. wide and growing. During mid-April when the blooms are at their most anyone who visited us commented and also wanted to know what it was, followed by "Weigela, never heard of that!
Plant Weigela in a full sun area for the greatest show of springtime blooms from the growing Weigela. Weigela may also be planted in light shade, flowering will not be as abundant, but blooms will appear. When considering where to plant Weigela, choose an area with moist, well-draining soil. Most cultivars of growing Weigela are most beneficial when flowering; include them in mixed borders with other shrubs that provide different seasonal interest.
When to Prune Weigela
It is best to prune Weigela shrubs in the late spring after they have finished blooming. Pruning Weigela bushes right after they bloom will keep you from inadvertently pruning off next year's flowers. This is because Weigela bloom on wood that it is a year old. The wood that grows this year will bloom next year. Pruning Weigelas' after blooming means that you will pruning before the blooming wood has a chance to grow.
